Limited Edition tin design for Nescafé Azera Decaf Americano coffee

Illustration of a woman with hair made from swirling coffee and milk which has overflowed from the coffee cup fascinator on her head. A bird is perched on one of her curls, glancing towards her. There is a sun in the background radiating warmth to the piece. The colour palette consists mostly of yellow, blue, white and tan.

Nescafé Azera X The King’s Trust Competition

My design ‘Summer Breeze’ was one of the four winners chosen to feature on Nescafé Azera’s Limited Edition coffee tins for 2025.

This year’s theme was ‘Summer isn’t summer without iced coffee’. The brief asked us to interpret what a perfect summer’s day feels like and how iced coffee fits into that. For me, an ideal day is one where the sun shines but there’s still a gentle breeze. This feeling mirrors the refreshing coolness of iced coffee on a hot day.

I illustrated the woman’s flowing hair to symbolise this breeze while also capturing the swirling blend of coffee and milk. The colour palette incorporates yellow and pastel blue to create a balance between the warmth of summer and the coolness of an iced beverage.  The blue represents the crisp nature of the drink, while the yellow mirrors the radiant, sunlit days that make summer so up-lifting.

I wanted my design to convey the relaxing feeling of sipping a chilled drink in the heat - a joyful combination of the smooth taste of the coffee, listening to birdsong and taking in the beauty of the sunshine.  I hope this feeling resonates with someone picking up my tin and inspires them to experience it themselves.

I have always loved packaging design - there’s something so special about turning an everyday item into a little piece of art. It has been amazing to design a tin and to see it on the shelves!
